I find that tech people are weirdly obsessed with optimizing news websites. But we forget that every network call is usually an intentional one, and most likely to help drive revenue. Without that revenue, there won't be any sports coverage for you to read.

I do pay for my local newspaper, and a nationwide one. I even want to pay more, to make it pleasant to read. But like most publications (here in Germany), there just is no tier without ads and other bloat and bullshit.
That’s why, if you can, I advise you to contribute to https://github.com/fivefilters/ftr-site-config
please contribute rules to extract content from your favourite websites. This is used in Offpunk (through "unmerdify") and works really great!
I’m with Gruber on this one: scriptable webpages was a mistake.
