Working on products people hate

A product people hate is usually providing a fair amount of value to its users (or at least to its purchasers, in the case of enterprise software).
Very strong "Yes, the planet got destroyed. But for a beautiful moment in time, we created a lot of value for shareholders." energy.
Also, is «value provided to purchasers» (with no value to the users, and possibly neither to the purchasing organisation) what less polite people call «kickbacks»?
It seems to me this post mixes together two very different things to justify author's involvement in one of them: crappy tech and unethical tech.
