Ironically, the Monad always has at least one side-effect: it makes me feel like an idiot.
I didn't expect to find this so well written.
More people should read these and I'm curious what favorites people have/find as well as other good equivalents - koans used to be more popular and I saw some good work along these lines, I wonder why they seemed to have died down in the past years..
I've read that WWII and the subsequent occupation of Japan had a damping effect on the influence of Japanese culture, but it was only temporary. Perhaps that accounts for the resurgence in the last ~60 years or so?
I think the original MIT AI lab koans are charming and funny. They're short like koans, very smart, there's just a few of them, and they're obviously respectful. ESR's collected koans were a little much but still kinda short, funny and generally unbiased.
A friend of mine introduced me to these at least a decade ago now and I've been re-re-reading them throughout my career ever since. There's a lot of really good, sharp wisdom in them.
