Expected a rant about Docker the container system, got Docker the KDE system tray app for Openbox 2.

Which predates the container system by quite a few years, btw.

  I distinctly remember ppl used to accidentally install the system tray app when they meant to install the container runtime before it made it into the official Debian & Ubuntu repos as docker.io.

    oh so this is the thing I consistently accidentally installed!

    I came to know this because when I did “emerge docker” in gentoo, it’s ambiguous and emerge told me to select x11-plugins/docker or app-containers/docker.

    I had the reverse confusion where for a long time I thought the container system was somehow about operating system docks at the bottom of the screen.

If the name looks familiar, icculus (and crew) did a bunch of work to port a bunch of mainstream games to Linux back in the day.

what’s the etymology of “dock” for the system tray anyways?

  It originated the same way as “Docker” (the software), as product branding.
  
  In the case of “the dock”, I think it was first used in NextStep, and then reapplied in e.g. Window Maker and Mac OS.
