I use FastMail and save myself all the headaches. Good read about the headaches I'm saving though
I like the idea of self hosting mail at home, but then what happens when I move home?
A backup MX isn't quite enough, because important emails are sent during house moves.
I'm sure it's doable, but moving home is already stressful enough! I'm not sure I want to be adding mail migration steps to my home moving checklist.
I'd be happy for my blog or hidden DNS master to be down during that time though.
I used to host email from home but it's not really practical these days, at least not using your typical residential ISPs. Moves, as you mentioned, ISP port blocks, residential IP range block lists. I moved my mail server to an inexpensive VM about 15 years ago and it's been happy there ever since.
If you are well-settled and have some kind of business quality connectivity with a static IP that is not on residential or other blocklists then it should be fine.

There's great options for hosted mailbox solutions (Migadu, Simplymail, Fastmail, etc.) that I can't imagine self hosting for any important inbox. For fun/non-important things, sure.
I did. If somebody would pay me, I'd do it again.
