Burnout in Open Source: A Structural Problem We Can Fix Together

A pull request comes in. Someone earnestly trying to help? Nope — it’s clearly something they threw AI at without understanding the code.

Not to minimize legitimate burnout, but this problem is actually fairly easy to handle with an LLM ban. First-time offenders get a warning, repeat offenders get a ban.

Obviously burnout is caused by more than just slop contributions, but if you don't have even the basic defenses in place you're gonna feel the hurt.

Perhaps companies that rely on Open Source and recognise the need to give thanks to the OSS community could sponsor community events that aim to build social and emotional support among maintainers, or advance principles of good governance.

I don't find the solutions in the article to be very realistic. If you wait for companies to help you out of the goodness of their hearts you're mostly going to just waste a lot of time. Honestly I think the best thing individual maintainers can do is adjust their thresholds around what kind of behavior warrants a ban, including overly-entitled behavior. Blocklists are a wonderful mental health tool that are sadly under-appreciated.
