No shade or anything like that (and this project is very cool), but why is CP/M still popular in retro circles? Genuine question - there's no new software and no graphical mode (right?) so... why? Unless the answer is "for fun", then sure. Just trying to see if I'm missing something.
“For fun” is a big part of it. It’s a functioning operating system that’s easy to port to new hardware and allows a huge amount of software to run. People in this space are writing new programs for it, too.
I have to admit, I wonder the same thing.
I owned a CP/M computer from new – one probably unknown to most American readers, but the Amstrad PCW sold several million units in the 1990s.
I remember using CP/M and as a result I have zero nostalgia for it.
The whole thing can be understood by one person, that's the attraction. The same is the case for the Oberon system. But not much else exists, unless it's a toy/hobby system or an OS for a home computer.

I have a design for something like this in KiCAD and SolidWorks… it’s a calculator form factor with enough extra buttons to be usable as a computer of sorts, with a two-line character LCD for output. Maybe I should unearth and complete that project.
