The Hibernate Origin Story (Outsider Edition)

This is about a Java language feature and nothing to do with computer hibernation/wake/resume.

I enjoyed this story. I came into web development as we know it from early Django, and then joined an agency where even Java was considered shockingly modern (10 years after it debuted), and the idea of using anything without an Oracle contract was looked at with suspicion. So I managed to drag them into using Java, and with it came Hibernate.

I did not love the XML format for Hibernate mappings, but it did its job, the programming interface was very reasonable once you got the mappings down. Once we switched to .NET, we stuck with NHibernate (a port of Hibernate to .NET by a different team), because Entity Framework's support for Oracle was terrible at the time. NHibernate got features like fluent programmatic mappings and functional query interfaces just in time for Entity Framework to catch up and cause it to become unnecessary. I did gain an appreciation for the Data Mapper style of ORM as very different from ActiveRecord style ORMs.
