Roomy is an open-source Discord alternative for the decentralized web, built around public, forum-like community spaces rather than private messaging. It uses Bluesky's AT Protocol for identity and social discovery.
Could be nice to have that 1-sentence description of the project in the blog post, I spent a few minutes trying to find out what it was without success. There doesn't seem to be a public website either.
This looks interesting, but I can't tell whether it meets my criteria. Being open source and using AT Proto doesn't tell me much. Is it an open standard or another 'platform'? Is it encrypted? Moderated? Surveiled? Do I have to accept any terms of service? (I will not)
The code is in typescript/svelte, and I haven't dug deeper: https://github.com/muni-town
One of the main features of Discord was being able to try it out without having to go through a sign up process. It seems like Discord clones still haven't figured that out.
That has never been my experience, so I don't know if I just have gotten unlucky that every Discord I would have wanted to use has set itself private(?) or what but discord just loves to pop up "you gotta be logged in, but even if you are logged in then fuck you if you want to have more than $arbitrary workspaces you want to follow"
Take for example https://discord.com/invite/sentry - I get two choices, give them my birthday or Log in. Same for Scrapy
I think perhaps you may be thinking of the actually open (both in terms of access and in terms of Open Source) Zulip, e.g. https://rust-lang.zulipchat.com/ <-- poof, no birthday required
