A New Equal-Area Map for Interactive Computer Use

I fully understand and support the logic of the UN resolution, and I have no intention of arguing about it. It’s good to change the default view of earth.
But at the same time, I almost never look at a world map, I look at parts of a world map. And in most cases, this map is worse for my use case than web Mercator. Having north and south be perpendicular to east and west is really useful!
I largely agree. I'm curious though what your thoughts are of the zoomable "Compromise Cylindrical Projection" shown in the article. It also has north/south perpendicular to east/west.
Well, I will own up to my mistake and say that I thought your equal area example at the top was the projection being discussed.
I like the compromise projection, but I’m on mobile right now and will explore more later. I apologize for jumping to a conclusion!
No problem, it is true that is the main point of discussion.
But on your prior point "I look at parts of a world map", it might not be easy to see on mobile, but if you zoom into any of the maps on the page to view just part of the world, it becomes the mercator projection and north/south become perpendicular to east/west, so it seems to meet what you're asking for!
